The Weatherseal Community Heroes team was down in Saltcoats on Monday to visit 3TFM Community Radio and award the community station a £500 bursary.
They are a very worthy cause and are one of only a handful of community stations in the country whose focus is on health awareness. 3TFM broadcast to the 3 Towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston in Ayrshire on 103.1fm and also broadcast online at 3tfm.org. With a primary focus of promoting health, 3TFM takes volunteers from the three towns and surrounding areas who are interested in different aspects of broadcasting. They then provide training in live presentation, radio production, administration and other key skills to this industry.
The organisation also provides the facility for local community groups to further their audiences and increase participation by playing on-air ads. To date, more than 260 community groups including the ederley, youth projects, credit unions, cancer support groups, football and arts organisations have promoted their work “on-air”.
The area 3tFM broadcast to is one of the most disadvantaged in Scotland, with a higher than the national average statistics for drug misuse, underage pregnancies, ill health, and unemployment.
We caught up with Weatherseal managing director Tony Reilly to ask him what he thought of the newest beneficiary:
“There were so many brilliant and varied entries for Ayrshire that it really was hard to make a decision. 3TFM Community Radio was chosen not just because of the services that they offer to the public across the three towns, but that they actively support other local community groups in the area.”
Archie Edgar, Funding Officer at 3TFM Community Radio said,
“We are delighted that Weatherseal have given us this grant it will help us complete phase one of our digital upgrade programme to enable us to switch from analogue broadcast equipment, to a new state of the art digital studio.
I would like to thank everyone at Weatherseal for their financial help. Our new studio should go live before the end of June 2014,and listeners will hear a big difference to the station output. We are all very excited about it here at 3TFM Community Radio .”
You can see the benefits of applying for our #communityheroes grant and our Motherwell and Stirling applications are still open.
